A procedure is given for measuring kiln-drying degrade in lumber and relating degrade to loss in value as a basis for more efficient and profitable kiln operation. Improved segregation, stickering and baffling of lumber loads in the kiln, together with modification in kiln structures and schedules, may reduce these losses, and would be justified where cost is more than offset by increased sales value. Studies show that the greatest losses in value occur in the upper grades of all species, where the higher sales values justify better control at higher product cost. However, the lower grades offer opportunities for investment in improved techniques, since lesser unit gains would be multiplied by greater production volume. Based upon commercial operations at four mills, the study indicates considerable opportunity to profitably increase output quality.
