For example, the requirements of a board for making wood-veneered panels should have the following physical properties: Density–40-45 lbs. per cu. ft. (Sp. Gr. 0.64-0.72). Transverse strength (MOR)–over 1500 psi. Tensile strength–over 700 psi. Water absorption–4 inches by 4 inches by 3/4 inch specimens–2 hrs. 0.3 percent–12 hours. 15 percent hardness–800 lbs. Thermal conductivity–approximately 0.75. Screwholding power–No. 8 wood screw driven 3/4 inch in l/8 inch pilot hole requires over 300 lbs. for withdrawal. Good dimensional stability, machinability, gluability, warpage resistance, and finish. A core board having these properties can also serve as a base for the application of plastic laminates. The point of maximum operating efficiency is a plant having 24-hour capacity of at least 50,000 sq. ft. of 3/4 inch board.
