Four independent forest landowners, who had their land under management for the last 12-30 years, combined their holdings into a single unit in an effort to create the basis for a hardwood utilization complex. The 10-year renewable contract, for a guaranteed 8 million board feet of lumber per year was sufficient to attract a company that was willing to invest several million dollars in the area. The present sawmill is in operation and there is considerable interest from several other industries to locate on the same industrial site. In addition, there are several large landowners in the area who would like to place their lands into the complex. The industrial development of the site could reach 13 million dollars and employ more than 500 people when the maximum is reached. This is a method by which rural areas could have industrial development at no cost to the local people and at the same time use the natural resources of the area at their highest level.
