The basic functions of wood adhesives are described and trends in adhesive development are traced. The characteristics of the synthetic resins–phenol, resorcinol, melamine, urea, and polyvinyl acetate–are summarized. Innovations in equipment, catalyst systems, assembly and curing methods, and methods of shipping and storage are providing impetus to the growing importance of adhesives in forest products industries. Important activity has occurred in the area of evaluating adhesive performance. The need for additional study of test methods and of the basic factors of wood adhesion is discussed.
