Various machines for debarking and chipping sawmill waste wood are available to the pulp and paper industry in the southern United States. Bark can be removed from logs by shearing the cambium, hydraulic erosion, flailing chains, or rotating knives. Slab debarkers would be useful, but have not come into practical use in the South. Wood chippers may be gravity-fed or forced-fed but should have these features: detachable wear plates, disc speed of 800-1,000 rpm, adjustable and replaceable bed-knife, feed correlated to disc rpm, and a slicing rather than a chopping action.
