Because of the increased use of panel material for sheathing and subflooring, lower grade boards formerly used for these purposes have declined in price below that of dimension lumber. Previous research indicates that nailed, 2-ply, vertically laminated beams equivalent to No. 2 stress-graded dimension can be made from southern pine No. 2 boards by random selection and layup procedures. A suggested type of mechanized production line is estimated to turn out 23 Mbf of such beams per day at a cost of $9.75/Mbf. Lumber wholesalers could realize a potential profit of $7.25/Mbf from the manufacture of these beams because of the wholesale price differential of $17/Mbf between southern pine No. 2 boards and No. 2 dimension lumber.
