Ten-inch diameter pole stubs of messmate stringybark (Eucalyptus obliqua) were treated with creosote, treated with copper-chrome-arsenic, or left untreated as controls. Their ends were then embedded 3-feet deep in the ground at Belgrave, Victoria. Moisture content measurements taken in a radial direction at 4 feet above ground level showed that 1) there was no significant influence of preservative on moisture distribution after 3 years of service, 2) moisture content values at depths of 2 inches or more were still well above the fiber saturation point, 3) moisture content increased with distance towards the pith.
