Do hardwood survey data reflect the real world?

Comments herein apply to hardwood sawtimber only. The USFS/FIA figures, appear to be extremely high. The discrepancy in what the FIA figures report and what many in the industry actually see in the forest can be attributed to 1) the fact that grades 3 and 4 account for about 2/3 of the total volume listed in the FIA summaries, even though those grades include logs not generally used by the hardwood lumber industry; and 2) the fact that FIA figures are shown according to the International I/4-inch Rule, and not Doyle, which is the industry standard.
