Compressed dowels produce stronger joints than spiral dowels. Both are better than regular dowels. Polyvinyl and hot animal glue were the best of the glues tested. A hole size slightly larger (1/64) than the dowel pin produced the strongest joints. Regular dowels were more sensitive to hole size than spiral or compressed dowels.
