Thick hem-fir lumber (101-mm square) was sorted into six groups based on species and basic density. All groups were dried with the same schedule in an experimental kiln. Final moisture content distributions did not improve after separation of species. After basic density separation, however, the runs with low density lumber resulted in a reduction of drying times, volumetric shrinkage, moisture content difference between core and shell, and variability when compared to the runs with high density lumber.
