A series of kiln-drying studies were made over an 8-year period with the objectives of developing adequate moisture measurement procedures, determining seasoning degrade magnitude and costs, establishing the relationship of degrade to final moisture content, and developing a realistic dried moisture content specification. It was established that 15 plus or minus 4 percent was a practical moisture content specification that could be achieved by rather long mild schedules with seasoning degrade and trim loss costs not exceeding $3.00 per Mbf. It was noted that degrade cost varied inversely with moisture content and directly with lumber width.
