The dulling behavior of three sawtooth tipping materials– a stellite containing 59 percent cobalt and two tungsten-carbide grades containing 6 percent and 18 percent cobalt, respectively– were studied in cutting unseasoned western redcedar. The least dulling was observed for the stellite, which was 25 to 50 percent less than the dulling of the tungsten carbide with 6 percent cobalt. The carbide grade containing 18 percent cobalt showed excessive dulling and should certainly not be used in cutting unseasoned western redcedar.
