Heartwood stakes of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco], from the Pacific coast (variety menziesii) and interior (var. glauca) sources, were equally durable after 13 years of contact with soil. Sixteen stakes of the coastal variety had an average life of 6.9 years; 20 stakes of the interior variety had an estimated average life of 8.5 years. Average ages of failed stakes of the two varieties did not differ significantly (P=0.05).
