Experimental latex stains have been evaluated in both accelerated and outdoor weathering tests on cedar, redwood, and southern pine. The results show that acrylic latex stains at 20 percent solids applied to rough-sawed surfaces perform very well at least up to 2.5 years. In accelerated tests, acrylic latex stains performed as well as a proven oil-base stain formula. Smooth boards were not good substrates for these experimental stains. Excellent stain durability was found on both smooth and rough southern pine boards when the boards had been pretreated with a copper chromate solution.
