Southern pine blocks were treated with 41 textile dyes, weathered, and exposed to six wood destroying fungi. Triphenylmethane dyes were effective, and one, ethyl violet, is an efficient fungistatic compound in wood. The ethyl violet treatment lowers the weight losses to about 3 percent, however, with dye retentions in excess of 1.5 percent. This 3 percent loss in weight can be attributed to losses inherent in the method, and is not considered significant.
