Eastern Hardwood Resources: Trends and Prospects

The hardwood timber inventory east of the Rocky Mountains is increasing. It now totals more than 200 billion cubic feet, and annual growth exceeds removals by 70 percent. However, supplies of large, high-quality trees are getting tighter. Little change is foreseeable in the near future. Additionally, thousands of acres of hardwood sites in the South are being converted annually to pasture and soybean production. Prudent management of the remaining acreage is necessary to meet future hardwood demand.
