Effect of a Mold, Trichoderma Viride, on Decay of Birch By Four Storage-Rot Fungi

A strain of the mold Trichoderma viride, selected from among 12 strains isolated from wood or from lumber yards for its inhibitory action against four wood-decaying fungi, was grown in paired culture on wood blocks in soil jars with the sapwood rotting fungi, Polyporus adustus, P. hirsutus, P. versicolor, and Stereum purpureum. Decay by three of these fungi was almost completely inhibited, but decay of the blocks by the fourth fungus, P. adustus, was prevented only when the mold was inoculated first. Even when both were inoculated at the same time, decay was reduced by two-thirds of the normal decay caused by inoculation of P. adustus alone. A field test with small birch bolts confirmed the above results in general. However, P. adustus was only partially inhibited, and some decay was caused by two unidentified Basidiomycetes following chance infection of the bolts.
