Butt end joints in balsa glued with resorcinol resin were prepared with three glue viscosities and two surface preparations over a wide range of specific gravities. Up to a specific gravity of 0.20, tensile strength had a positive linear relationship to gravity. Sawed surfaces were stronger than sanded surfaces. Low viscosity glue gave the highest strength. The adhesive system restricts the ultimate strength in tension.
