In this study, extracted and unextracted redwood heartwood specimens were tested for decay resistance to a number of wood-destroying fungi. Kiln-drying or air-drying followed by kiln-drying as used in the study tends to reduce the decay resistance of all-heart 4/4 redwood boards only slightly. Drying which involves presteaming or solvent seasoning methods may drop the decay resistance into the next lower resistance class, from highly resistant to resistant. However, the reduction in decay resistance should not be significant in the use to which kiln-dried redwood heartwood is normally employed.
