Three fabrication variables–veneer species, veneer joints, and core joints–were tested for their effects on column critical buckling stress. Results indicated no significant difference (0.05 level) between yellow-poplar and southern pine veneers. Critical buckling stresses were significantly higher for veneer scarf joints compared with veneer butt joints, and for full-length cores compared with scarf-jointed cores. The Ylinen column formula was the best predictor of critical buckling stress.
