The effect of gamma radiation on the decay resistance of the heartwood of white oak, red oak, sweetgum, and Douglas-fir was studied. Air-dry 2-inch cubes of each species were irradiated in a uniform radiation field of a Gammacell 220. Six logarithmically spaced dosages were applied. The rate of irradiation was 1.03 million rads per hour, at 5 percent. The wood was evaluated for decay resistance by the soil-block test using a single decay fungus, Poria monticola (Madison 698). No effect of irradiation was found.
