Wood harvested from loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations was tested to determine the effect of geographic location and provenance on mechanical properties of juvenile and mature wood. Plantations sampled were established as part of the Southwide Pine Seed Source Study in 1952 to 1953. Three seed sources, Onslow County, N.C., Livingston Parish, La., and a local seed source, were sampled at each of three locations: Georgia Coastal Plain, Georgia Piedmont, and Arkansas Upper Coastal Plain. Plantation location had a statistically significant effect on modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture of both juvenile an mature wood. Seed source location was not a significant factor.
