Effect of loading and vibration on bending properties of pallet deckboards

This study was conducted to explore the effect of repeated loadings and vibration on the bending properties of pallet deckboards. Pallets were fabricated from three common hardwood species: white oak, red oak, and yellow-poplar. Pallets with 10 deckboards of each species were subjected to a 1,500-pound load and resonant vibration for 10 hours and then an additional 5 hours to determine if any change occurred in the bending properties of the boards. After each loading and vibration treatment, the boards were nondestructively tested in bending to determine the modulus of elasticity (MOE). These measurements were compared to the initial MOE measurements of the boards. In addition, the final bending modulus of rupture (MOR) was compared to the initial MOR of matched samples. Results showed that the average MOE for all samples in each species did not change significantly. Also, MOR values, before and after vibration, were not significantly different.
