The response of a flame ionization-based total hydrocarbon analyzer was found to be depressed up to 21 percent due to the effect of moisture in the sampled gas. This indicates that direct sampling of exhaust gas, from a lumber dry kiln by EPA Method 25A, for example, may provide inaccurate estimates of hydrocarbon emissions unless a correction is made or the sampled gas is diluted.
