Presteaming of stain-susceptible green redwood at 212?F was the most effective of the methods tried for reducing the amount of subsequent seasoning stain and extractive bleeding. Less satisfactory methods were boiling in a sodium bisulphite solution, boiling in water, preheating in an oven, and dielectric heating. Exposure to infrared or ultra-violet light apparently had no effect. The recommended duration of presteaming is 4 hours.
