Based on first results of a study of the rotary veneer- cutting of Philippine white and red lauan, this paper outlines a general experimental method for evaluating the quality of veneer produced under various cutting conditions. Most of the work directly involved the cold-cutting of 1/8-inch veneer, but some work was done on cold-cutting of 1/16-inch veneer as well as cutting of bolts pretreated in hot water. The most significant influence of knife angle was its effect on uniformity of thickness. Nosebar compression affected veneer thickness, tightness, and smoothness. Cold cutting reduced tensile strength to less than 30 percent of controls.
