Effect of slope of grain on tensile strength

Small, clear wood specimens of Douglas-fir with grain angles from 1 to 16.5 degrees were tested for tensile strength. The tensile strength slope-of-grain data were characterized by a Hankinson-type formula. The data show the expected trend of decreasing strength with increasing grain angle.
