Under standardized conditions, the gloss of a painted hardboard can be a measure of paint absorption. In a production system, one-sided oil or water absorption can be an easy method to observe variations in paint binder holdout. Surface layer density, pulp freeness, press temperature, and MC of the fiber mat during the hot press operation have a significant effect on the paint absorption. A comparison of commercial hardboards produced by wet, semi-dry and dry processes indicated that the lower degree of softening, usually achieved at the lower MC of the fiber mat in the dry process, lead to a higher paint absorption.
