A sample of 122 southern pine peeler blocks containing sweep or crook and 226 straight blocks was processed into veneer to evaluate the effect of sweep and crook on veneer yield. Sweep and crook seriously reduce both total yield of veneer and yield of full sheet veneer. When sweep or crook is large, a major proportion of block volume becomes plant residue. Equations are presented to estimate veneer yield based on block scaling diameter and amount of sweep or crook.
