This paper describes the inhibitory impact of water soluble extractives in western larch (Larix occidentalis) on portland cement setting. Hydration data is used to assess this inhibitory impact. It was found that even at relatively low levels of extract addition (based on cement weight), hydration data are adversely affected. Removal of such extractives substantially improved cement setting, thereby positively influencing larch wood-cement compatibility.
