It is commonly assumed that 0.80 is the effective length factor for the design of compression web members in light wood trusses. This study examined the validity of this assumption by using a factorial experiment which included truss type (i.e. number of members at a joint), truss plate width, and end gap size as treatment variables. Use of the 0.80 effective length factor was found to be a reasonable and slightly conservative design assumption.
