The current U.S. wood pole standard, ANSI O5.1 (1), allows certain species to be kiln-dried at a temperature higher than 170?F (76.7?C) without a penalty in strength reduction. Red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) is currently excluded from that list. This project was undertaken to determine if red pine poles can be dried using a high-temperature drying process without any adverse effects on bending properties. The test results did not support the continued exclusion of red pine poles from that list.
