Phenol was reacted with formaldehyde at 60?C and 80?C with various amounts of methanol present in the reaction mixture. The apparent rate constants and activation energies were calculated with a modified second order equation, which was the best fitted by data obtained from the entire reaction period of the experiment. Methanol decreased the rate of reaction. However, the activation energies were not significantly affected by the methanol concentration.
