End coating logs to prevent stain and checking

One end of over 100 logs was coated with a wax-type end coating. These logs were then stored for up to 12 weeks during summer weather in Wisconsin. After storage, the logs were sawn into lumber and visual observations were made of the extent of end checking and of blue staining. The extent of blue stain in hard maple logs was 4 and 13 inches for the coated and uncoated ends, respectively, after 12 weeks of storage. The extent of blue stain in red pine logs was 2 and 4 inches for the coated and uncoated ends, respectively, after 9 weeks of storage. The extent of end splitting in hard maple logs was 1 and 4 inches for the coated and uncoated ends, respectively, after 12 weeks of storage. The extent of end splitting in red oak logs was 0 and 6 inches for the coated and uncoated ends, respectively, after 12 weeks of storage. Since the cost of coating is small in relation to the benefits, end coating of logs in storage is recommended.
