Ultimate breaking strength of dowel joints does not continue to increase indefinitely with dowel length. Maximum strength in each diameter class can be obtained with dowels that have a length/diameter ratio of about 8:1 or 9:1. Ultimate breaking strength within effective length limits is proportional to 0.89 where L is the dowel length. Ultimate breaking strength within effective length limits is directly proportional to dowel diameter. Dowel joints with specified strength properties can be designed using an engineering design formula. The design formula holds for end-to-side-grain joints.
