Simple equations are given that can be used to estimate the influence of slicing rate, loading delay, flitch dimension, and product thickness on the output rate and input requirements of a typical wood-slicing operation. Without interrupting the operation, a production manager may use these equations to implement several aspects of production planning and control, such as rate changes with important raw material, machine and product variables, pinpointing the most important variables in a particular situation, judging efficiency or proximity to ultimate capacity, and maintaining input-output balance in the operation.
