The available inventory and the cost of delivered wood are crucial to the decision-making process of managers when selecting a mill site. The Clean Chip Availability Assessment System (CLASS) is used to evaluate two alternative locations for a proposed hardwood sawmill. Restrictions such as ownership pattern, slope, product, and grade are illustrated. CLASS can simultaneously consider availability stumpage cost, harvesting cost, and transportation cost in the mill location decision.
