A microcomputer-based particleboard diagnostic expert system (PDX) was developed to diagnose and solve particleboard manufacturing problems. An expert system (ES) shell, KES(tm), served as the development software. Expert knowledge was collected from plant personnel and entered into the ES knowledge base. Analytical segments of PDX dealt with solving common board problems, evaluating production data, and analyzing milling data. Results showed that knowledge base acquisition and processing were impractical. Data were either not available or would have required many years to collect and develop to make PDX a true expert. Even if the knowledge base could have been developed, with the current state of technology, microcomputer-based ES shells do not have the capacity to process the necessarily large knowledge base. Therefore, the ES concept may have promise for the future but appears to have little utility in particleboard manufacturing at this time.
