A new chipping machine has been designed for producing chips 2-1/2 inches long with cross sections 1-inch x 1-inch or less. These chips, when flaked in a ring-type flaker, produce long thin flakes that can be used to produce structural grade particleboard. The most desirable feature is that the long thin flakes can be aligned in the direction of the wood grain providing superior strength in one direction of the formed board. The new chipper consumes from 5 to 15 hp-min per cubic foot of fingerling chips produced depending the species chipped. This power consumption is slightly greater than with conventional chippers and therefore is low enough for remote field operations.
