Export Markets for British Columbia Softwood Lumber Producers: Economic Theory vs. Empirical Evidence

British Columbia’s softwood lumber industry is geared to international trade. The largest portion of exports have traditionally gone to the United States, but this proportion is declining due to competition from the United States’ southeastern industry. Exports to other countries have remained consistent (1972-1976) at about 15 to 20 percent of total exports. The development and maintenance of markets for the British Columbia products will depend to a large part on both changing world trends in product demand and on factors affecting the comparative costs of lumber products as produced.
