There are five major factors that determine the serviceability of exterior paints on wood: 1) The kind of wood. 2) Proper design to keep the wood dry enough to hold paint. 3) The composition and quality of the paint. 4) Conditions and technique of applying the paint. 5) Variations in the severity of local exposure. Three-coat systems are necessary on new wood. Inclusion of mildewcides in clear finishes may decrease their ultimate durability. Ultraviolet-light absorbing agents appear to have a positive effect on durability. The use of small amounts of iron oxide in the first coat gave the most promising results in maintaining durability.
