Extractive Enhancement in Pines By Paraquat Treatment

Oleoresin enhancement by paraquat treatment of pines can be economically rewarding. A 9-month study covering 13 states showed an increase of over 150 extractives in slash and loblolly pines. A large-scale experiment indicates that oleoresin losses are small when paraquat-treated wood is stored in log form as compared to chip form. With present technology the cost of treatment and insect control can be recovered in as little as 4 months and profits increase linearly with time thereafter. A number of combinations of treatment methods and paraquat concentrations confirms that the oleoresin enhancement rate is a function of the quantity of paraquat added. The intensity of insect attack and the yield of oleoresin in paraquat treated trees are both closely related with the concentration of paraquat. Ethrel used in combination with diquat resulted in higher oleoresin yields than observed with either diquat or paraquat alone.
