In the chipcore process, 9000 square feet of 1/2-inch core are produced in each 24 hours, using two men. Equipment required includes a chipper, swinghammer shredder, continuous drier, tramp-metal separator, storage bin, chip weighometer, resin-chip blender mixer, continuous resin-chip blending system, extruder, automatic cut-off arrangement, veneering section, and conditioning chamber. Densities from 0.3 to values greater than solid wood can be produced. Properties depend on nature of the raw material. The degree of particle size segregation dictates panel flatness and stability. Advantages of extrusion over pressing are chip orientation, veneering without additional surface preparation, no need for edge trimming, uniform density, can produce fluted panels, and density can be varied.
