Face milling was applied to wood. Surface and flake quality improved as the feed position was changed from the up-milling to the down-milling feed position. Surface quality was improved primarily because of an edge radius joining the peripheral and face cutting edges and the co-linearity of a component of the velocity of the face mill and the feed direction. Suggestions as to how future planned research may improve the application of face milling to woodworking are included.
