The age of the wood, as expressed by the number of annual rings from the pith, appears to be the main determining factor in the explanation of variation in specific gravity of plantation-grown slash pine. The greater the age, as determined by its proximity to the pith, the greater the specific gravity becomes. The study further indicates that the specific gravity of slash pine tends to decrease with increasing height in the tree. The study was based on increment borings from 20 planted slash pine trees grown under various modified environmental conditions. Each tree was sampled at four height levels (4, 16, 28, and 40 feet) by boring through the pith in the north-south direction.
