Commercial phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde (PRF) separate application fast-set adhesives for the manufacture of exterior-grade structural glulam are described. These adhesives are equal to or lower in cost than traditional PRF adhesives, and have clamping times of only 2 hours instead of the traditional 16 to 24 hours. Their industrial performance is described and discussed. Heating is not needed nor is additional capital equipment, other than what is generally already available in traditional glulam factories. The low cost of these adhesives and the production flow advantages attained by their use explain their rapid deployment in the South African glulam and finger-jointing industry.
