Freshly peeled posts of jack pine, aspen, and American elm were treated on part of the below-ground portion with various combinations of copper sulfate, sodium dichromate, and disodium hydrogen arsenate in powdered form. Final inspection indicated that copper sulfate followed a week later with the arsenate was the most effective. It was most effective on pine and aspen. Copper sulfate followed by borax, tested only on aspen, was second to copper and arsenic in extending the life of this wood. The aboveground portion of the posts was well protected by the same treatment applied only on the top cross section. Estimated life of aspen and jack pine treated by powdered copper sulfate and disodium hydrogen arsenate is more than 23 years.
