Fire Endurance of a Particleboard Decked Floor/Ceiling Assembly

Results of a standard ASTM E-119 test to determine the fire endurance of a full-size floor/ceiling specimen (13 ft. 9 in. by 17 ft.) utilizing a single layer of 1-inch-thick particleboard as the upper membrane are described. The construction, which also involved 2-by 10-inch Douglas-fir joists (24 in. on center) and a lower membrane of 5/8-inch-thick gypsum wallboard, was loaded to 68 lb./square foot. The assembly successfully met the standard criteria for a 1-hour rating.
