Fixed-knife pressure-bar planing method reduces or eliminates subsurface damage

Yellow-poplar and hard maple specimens conditioned at 8 percent MC were surfaced with a fixed-knife pressure-bar combination after abrasive and knife planing (peripheral milling). The rake and clearance angles for the fixed-knife system were 52-1/2 and 0 degrees, respectively. The stock was fed with the grain parallel to the feed direction and 2 degrees from parallel to the knife edge. The nominal depth of cut was 0.020-inch with a 0.015-inch vertical gap between the knife edge and pressure bar. Surface quality was evaluated visually and by scanning electron microscopy. The fixed-knife pressure-bar technique reduced or eliminated subsurface crushing and edge tear out.
