Flexural properties and compliance to visual grade requirements of 2 by 4 and 2 by 6 loblolly pine lumber obtained from a 19-year-old plantation

Flexural tests to failure were made on 2- by 4-inch and 2- by 6-inch lumber obtained from a 19-year-old loblolly pine plantation stand with 8- by 8-foot original spacing. The results indicate that the percent compliance of the tested pieces to required design flexural stiffness E is only 10 percent and the compliance to required flexural strength Fb is 70.5 percent. Implications of this study are that sawmills should examine the age of logs before processing them and avoid producing lumber from plantation sawlogs 19 years old or younger.
